Recreation Survey – is live!

Chesil Bank Recreation projects

Now the pandemic (hopefully) has almost passed, many of us will be thinking of the future and getting active outdoors with family and friends. Many will have to travel to Weymouth, Dorchester and Bridport in attend recreation facilities.

Your Parish Council (CBPC) is planning to upgrade the Portesham Playing Field so that recreational facilities will be available locally for the use of all the villages in the Chesil Bank area. This has already commenced with the renovation of the tennis court.

The playing field was gifted to the Portesham Parish in 1938 from the Strangways Estate, and then when the group council was formed in 1973 then all assets became the responsibility of Chesil Bank PC. (The Recreation ground in Abbotsbury was also gifted at the same time.)  The site has a condition in the conveyance which means we can only use it for Recreation, and it is also listed with Fields in Trust.

The playing field is a wonderful green space, which could be used for many different sports and activities. It could offer much greater benefits for everyone in the area, but it is currently underutilised.

Consequently, the plans for a new pavilion have been dusted off and ideas are now being sought from everyone in the Chesil Bank Parish to assist with the planning of this project.

To gauge opinion and make suggestions, we have prepared a brief survey. We would urge you to complete the survey and suggest the types of sports or pastimes you would like to see this area used for.

Ideas so far include hockey, netball, short tennis, football, rugby, bases for running or cycling clubs, a small skateboard facility and a meeting place for the scouts and other activity groups.

Please let us have your views and we look forward to receiving your feedback.
